Smile Makeover Principles

With a smile makeover, we’re focused not on particular dental procedures, we’re focused on the goals that we’re trying to achieve. We’ll also talk about some of the common restrictions that can make it hard for people to get the smile they desire, including issues of cost, time to completion, and scheduling challenges.

Once we’ve discussed the goals and challenges, we’ll recommend the best combination of procedures to get you the smile you’re looking for.

Smile Makeover Goals

During your consultation, we’ll start by talking about the goals you’re hoping to achieve with your smile makeover. Here are some of the more common goals, and it’s not uncommon for people to want to achieve several at once.

Whiter Teeth: Most of us would like to have a brighter smile. People associate a bright smile with youth, health, and success. So when you see your smile is more yellow than you’d like, it can make you feel very self-conscious. We’ll consider multiple approaches to brightening your teeth. Sometimes, it’s as simple as better hygiene or more regular dental checkups. Other times, teeth whitening is the right approach for you. But in some cases, veneers are the only way to get the whiteness you want.

Repaired Teeth: Life is full of adventure, and not all adventures are good for your teeth. If your teeth have been damaged by some of your life’s adventures, we can repair them so that they’ll be healthy, pain-free, and beautiful. Veneers might be the right choice for this. Or, if your teeth are decayed, perhaps a tooth-colored filling or dental crown is the right choice. If your tooth is badly damaged an infected or at risk of infection, we might recommend root canal therapy.

More Attractive Restorations: If you’ve had metal amalgam fillings or metal crowns placed in the past, you may not be happy with the results today. Even some older cosmetic restorations may not be as attractive as they were at first. We can replace your old restorations with more cosmetic modern options.

Replacing Lost Teeth: If you’ve lost one or more teeth, there are many replacement options that can give you back your whole smile. The most tooth-like replacement is dental implants, but dental bridges are also good in appropriate situations. Even a partial denture is a good choice, depending on your restrictions.

Long-Lasting Results: Most people want their beautiful smile results to last, but there are always tradeoffs. We will want to consider your other goals as well as your restrictions and decide how to maximize the longevity of your beautiful smile.

Smile Makeover Restrictions

If wishes were teeth, we’d all have the beautiful smiles we want already. But the reality is that for many of us, we have to consider some limitations that might shape the best smile makeover for us.

Cost: We understand that many people are concerned about the cost of a smile makeover. The good news is that there are actually many ways to help control the smile makeover costs. We can choose procedures that are less expensive and may not meet all of your goals, but are acceptable. And although insurance won’t cover cosmetic procedures, some cosmetic issues are also health issues, so replacing old restorations and repairing teeth can be partly covered by insurance.

Time: Most of us don’t have enough money, but these days time is an even bigger restriction. If you’re trying to get your results by a certain date, we may have to choose different procedures. The good news is that most cosmetic dentistry procedures can be completed fairly quickly. It only takes a few appointments, and each appointment may only take an hour or two. Some procedures can even be completed on the same day.

Health: We want to make sure your smile isn’t just beautiful, it’s healthy, too. Normally health and beauty go hand in hand, but sometimes we have to address health issues before we can start cosmetic dentistry. If this is the case with your smile makeover, we’ll talk about the best approach for achieving your smile goals, including improving your oral health.
